Sande horses have important jobs as teachers, partners and companions in the therapy process.  They are honored members of our barn family, adored by students and well-cared for by staff! 

 

If you have a horse that you think would make a good addition to our herd, we would love to hear from you.  Sande considers equines for lease, partial lease and donation.  Ideal equines are well-trained and sound with a relaxed temperament.  Their workload is somewhat rigorous, including 6 - 12 hours per week of walk / trot lessons, with canter work by experienced riders.  Horses used for the Therapeutic Riding program often carry heavy or unbalanced riders with low muscle tone, and must be virtually unflappable with excellent ground manners.  Sande takes special care to make sure their horses can comfortably and safely do their job, so horses undergo a vetting and trial before joining the team. 

 

Lesson curriculum prioritizes training students to properly give cues before corrections and maintain consistency across riders and instructors.  This helps our horses to maintain their training and enjoy their jobs as teachers for many years.
